PVC tubing is widely used in infusion equipment, suction instruments, oxygen supply devices, laboratory medical instruments and other applications. Many equipment manufacturers tend to mix up industrial-grade PVC tubing with medical-grade PVC tubing during procurement. Simply comparing prices while overlooking critical factors such as material compliance and suitability may bring risks to product certification and practical application. Below are key selection points of PVC tubing for medical devices as a reference for procurement and R&D teams.
The primary consideration is material grade. Ordinary industrial PVC cannot be used as a substitute for medical-grade raw materials. PVC tubing for medical devices is manufactured with dedicated medical PVC pellets, where stabilizers and plasticizers in the formula comply with specified specifications. For scenarios involving contact with liquid medicine or body fluids, formulations with low extractables can be prioritized. Additives in regular industrial PVC are not regulated under medical standards and carry risks of substance leaching. Such tubing fails to meet test requirements for medical devices and cannot be adopted as fluid transfer components for medical equipment.
Next, verify biocompatibility and relevant test documentation. Medical tubing may come into contact with liquid medicine and human mucous membranes. Buyers should request corresponding test reports from suppliers with reference to ISO 10993 biological evaluation standards. For products planned for overseas sales, confirm whether the material meets standards such as USP Class VI. Complete documentation facilitates testing and registration procedures for complete medical devices.
Select proper physical specifications based on working conditions. Shore hardness determines the flexibility of tubing. Softer grades are suitable for equipment requiring frequent bending, while harder tubing can maintain shape and avoid collapse. Check inner and outer diameter tolerances as well as wall thickness consistency. Stable dimensions enable tight assembly with connectors and lower leakage risks. Products with smooth inner walls, uniform texture and minimal black spots or bubbles are preferred to reduce particle generation and fluid retention.
Compatibility with sterilization methods is often overlooked. Most medical PVC tubing supports ethylene oxide (EtO) sterilization, and certain formulations tolerate gamma irradiation. Conventional PVC generally cannot withstand high-temperature autoclave sterilization. Confirm material resistance according to in-house sterilization processes before purchase, to prevent hardening, cracking or transparency loss after sterilization that leads to batch losses.
Evaluate resistance to conveyed media. Different liquid medicines and cleaning agents have varying impacts on PVC materials. Compatibility testing is recommended for tubing transporting oily pharmaceuticals or organic solvents to check for swelling, discoloration or material leaching. Standard medical PVC works well for transporting normal saline and clean water. Communicate custom formulations with manufacturers for special fluid applications.
Finally, pay attention to production control and customization capacity. Qualified manufacturers arrange separate production runs for medical tubing to avoid cross-contamination with industrial materials. Confirm suppliers’ processing capacity if colored tubing, multi-lumen tubing, fixed-length cutting or end finishing is required. Conduct small-batch sampling tests under simulated assembly and operating conditions before placing mass orders.
There is no universal standard for selecting PVC tubing for medical devices. Decisions should be based on equipment functions, contacting media, sterilization procedures and regulatory requirements of target markets. Balance material compliance, physical performance and procurement costs, and complete sufficient pre-sample verification to choose suitable tubing and support stable long-term operation of medical devices.
