Introduction to PVC pipes for medical devices

  • Release time: 2025-11-19

Medical device PVC pipe is a widely used plastic pipeline material in the medical field. The core conclusion is that it is made by adding special additives (such as medical grade plasticizers) and has low cost, easy processing, good chemical stability, and biocompatibility. It is suitable for various medical fluid transmission scenarios, but must comply with strict medical standards to ensure safety.
Core Features
Safety standard: using medical grade PVC resin and compliant additives (such as citrate ester environmentally friendly plasticizers, replacing traditional phthalates), meeting biocompatibility requirements, no harmful substances are released, avoiding contamination of the drug solution or contact risks.
Easy to process and adapt: With strong plasticity, it can be made into transparent, soft or hard pipes, and can be processed into different specifications through extrusion, injection molding and other processes to meet the connection needs of various medical devices.
Chemical and physical stability: resistant to corrosion by most drugs and disinfectants (such as alcohol and iodine), not easily reacting with medical media; Some soft PVC pipes have good flexibility, are resistant to bending and are not easily broken, making them suitable for mobile medical equipment or human intervention scenarios.
Significant cost advantage: Compared to medical pipes such as silicone and fluoroplastics, PVC pipes have lower production costs and can reduce the investment in medical consumables when used in bulk. They are a cost-effective choice for conventional medical scenarios.
Key compliance standards
International standards: Must comply with USP Class VI (United States Pharmacopeia), FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 (United States Food and Drug Administration), ISO 10993 (biocompatibility testing) to ensure biosafety and compliance with dissolution standards.
Domestic standards: Following GB 15593-1995 "Soft PVC Plastic for Blood Transfusion (Fluid) Equipment", YY/T 0242-2016 "PVC Granules for Medical Infusion, Blood Transfusion, and Injection Equipment", etc., standardize raw materials, production, and performance indicators.
Common types and application scenarios
Soft medical PVC pipe (including plasticizer):
Features: Soft, transparent, good elasticity, and can be sterilized (high-pressure steam, ethylene oxide).
Application: Disposable or reusable medical consumables such as infusion tubes, blood transfusion tubing, urinary catheters, drainage tubes, and ventilator tubing.
Hard medical PVC pipe (no/little plasticizer):
Features: High strength, good rigidity, pressure resistance, and not easily deformed.
Applications: Medical equipment casing pipelines, medical negative pressure suction system pipelines, laboratory reagent delivery pipelines, etc.
Precautions for use
Avoid exposure to high temperatures: Prolonged exposure to temperatures above 60 ℃ can cause aging and affect performance. Therefore, strict temperature and time control is necessary during sterilization.
Adaptation to specific media: Some highly oxidizing drugs (such as certain disinfectants) may accelerate PVC aging, and compatibility testing needs to be conducted in advance.
Disposable specification: Most PVC consumables that come into contact with blood or medication are designed for one-time use and are strictly prohibited from being reused to avoid cross infection.
